From Abbaye Fontfroide, it’s Roussane and Marsanne, imported from France's oldest wine-growing region for the sole reason that Members experience Languedoc’s lesser-seen flagship whites. A blend of 85% Roussanne and 15% Marsanne, the ’09 “Deo Gratias” expresses lively melon and peach, with an almost perfume-like nose, long layers of minerality show forth and hint at the Mediterranean climate of the South of France. Bright, ebullient, and tantalizing to the finish, this is a wine to convert even the lover of the heartiest Barolo, into the open arms of France’s finest whites.Inside Fact: The history is breathtaking: founded in 1093, the Abbaye de Fontfroide has decorated the landscape of Southern France for over nine centuries. Housing monks before their journey onto higher ground (Pope Innocent III, for one), the Abbey became privately owned after 1908, purchased by French families that included the illustrious d’Andoque de Serige famille. Generations later, the land (molded by the stony hillsides that characterise Corbières) continues to yield greatness, growing fruit that develops in the hands of Laure d’Andoque and her husband, Nicolas.
